Onto Perfection
But put ye on the Lord
Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts
thereof.
Romans 13:14
"A Living Sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God"
Required for His "Promise" of the "Comforter" and "Teacher." (John 14 and John 16)
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto you, but my Father which is in heaven. Matthew 16:17
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of
God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 1 Corinthians 15:50
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16
For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Isaiah 57:15
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:1-2
And he said to them all,
If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross
daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but
whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a
man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of
man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of
the holy angels. But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which
shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God. Luke 9:23-27
And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him,
Lord, I will follow you wherever you go. And Jesus said unto him,
Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the
Son of man has nowhere to lay his head. And he said unto another,
Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go
and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury
their dead: but you go and preach the kingdom of God. And another also
said, Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are
at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man,
having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of
God. Luke 9:57-62
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into
diverse temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience.
But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire,
wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to
all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask
in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven
with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any
thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. James
1:2-8
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon
your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of
the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world
is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit
that dwells in us lusts to envy? But he gives more grace. Wherefore he says, God
resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore
to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he
will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts,
ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned
to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the
Lord, and he shall lift you up. James 4:3-10
And when thou pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father which is in secret; and your Father which seed in secret shall reward thee openly. But when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Don't be like them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Moreover when you fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head, and wash thy face; That you appear not unto men to fast, but only unto your Father which is in secret: and your Father, which sees in secret, shall reward you openly. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:5-21
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asks receives and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Matthew 7:7-11
And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubled me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man comes, shall he find faith on the earth? And he spoke this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalted himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted. Luke 18:1-14
Let Him know you are lacking what is needed to "bear His fruit" (John 15) and "defeat the works of the devil," (1 John 3:8) that the gates of hell will not prevail against your attacks (Matthew 16:18) and freeing the oppressed. (Acts 10:38)
Let Him know this humbly on your knees in worship, but forcibly let Him know you are pressing violently into His Kingdom on His terms, presenting yourselves a "living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God."
What should your attitude be? What is your disposition? Would you put new wine in old skins? Would you put clean water in a dirty glass? The glass needs to be clean, otherwise the water would be contaminated. The Lord would never let this happen. Corruptible cannot inhabit incorruptible. If their is ant pride, selfishness, worldliness, temper, anxiety, bitterness, or complaining confess them unto God as being guilty and the Blood of Jesus will cleanse you from sin. Let your shame beget a contrite and humble heart before God.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. Romans 8:37
It is the Blood of Christ which cleanses, not you. Your part is to believe He will act on His Word.
Just as you would call on workers to remove damaged material from your house, call upon God to take sin from your being.
It is God who will cleanse you
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Matthew 3:11
And of the angels he says, Who makes his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. Hebrews 1:17, Psalms 104:4
Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and
you shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I
cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put
within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will
give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you
to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
Ezekiel 36:25-27 There is
therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not
after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in
Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law
could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in
the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the
righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh,
but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of
the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to
be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life
and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not
subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the
flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so
be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of
Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is
dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But
if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that
raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his
Spirit that dwells in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the
flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, you shall die:
but if you through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For
you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received
the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself bears
witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then
heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with
him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:1-17
He must be our all in all. He is not like
turning on the TV to watch your favorite show or taking time for your favorite
pastime. He is to be above all else, for He is God Who has made heavens and
earth and all that is in them, including you, for without Him there would be
nothing. Does He have your full attention? To be filled with the Spirit means to
be empty of self, and this complete surrender of self is required for Him to
hear your prayers. It is the empty vessel that God can fill with His Spirit and
allow Him to freely do His will in us as He did with Christ. John 5:30, 6:38,
12:49, 14:10.
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the
Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to
him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. For
this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who
has built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by
some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily
was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things
which were to be spoken after; But Christ as a son over his own house; whose
house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope
firm unto the end. Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost says, To day if you will hear
his voice, Harden not your hearts, (Psalms 95:7-8) as in the provocation, in the
day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me,
and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and
said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
So I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) Take heed,
brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing
from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To
day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are
made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast
unto the end; While it is said, To day if you will hear his voice, harden not
your hearts, as in the provocation. For some, when they had heard, did provoke:
howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. But with whom was he grieved
forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell
in the wilderness? And to whom swore he that they should not enter into his
rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in
because of unbelief. Let us therefore fear, lest, a
promise being left us of
entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto
us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not
profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we
which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my
wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from
the foundation of the world. For he spoke in a certain place of the seventh
day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And
in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore
it remains that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached
entered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in
David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his
voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he
not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest to
the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also has ceased from
his own works, as God did from his. Let us labor therefore to enter into
that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. For the
word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword,
piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and
marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things
are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Seeing
then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus
the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high
priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in
all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore
come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace
to help in time of need. Hebrews 3:1-4:16 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green
pastures: he leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul: he
leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I
walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou
art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou prepare a table
before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anoint my head with oil; my cup
runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Psalms 23
Where do you have Jesus? On the Cross, in the Tomb, in Heaven, or within you?
Complacency, self-satisfaction, and unbelief prevents being "filled with the Spirit." Also, do not think you have unfavorable circumstances or time, or consider that the "Promise" is not intended for you. Satan would prefer you keep from destroying his works.
Do not confuse the Gifts of the Spirit with the Gift of the Spirit. The Spirit may give gifts as He deems, but the command to the Christian is to be "filled with the Spirit."
The Old Testament analogy:
Hebrews 3-4:2 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who has built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost says, To day if you will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end; While it is said, To day if you will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? And to whom swore he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
See Numbers 13:17-14:45 to learn of Caleb's and Joshua's faith, and the unbelief which kept the Israelites wandering in the desert until their death without reaching the "promise" land. This Old Testament analogy is for our edification to not only see the Kingdom of God (John 3:3), but to enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:5) as only one can, through being filled with the Holy Spirit.
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. There has no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:1-13
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. Hebrews 6:1-6
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that you do, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:1-6
The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10
For the Christian, there are three distinct actions required for the "abundant life" Jesus offers. It is obvious that most Christians only succeed in the first two, otherwise, they would be living the Sermon on the Mount. (See Can You Live The Sermon On The Mount?)
Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her that she should help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needed: and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Like 10:38-42 (See Born Again, a new creation)
As the heat from the sun warms us and quickens our bodies, so the Spirit of the Son quickens our whole being, our innermost thoughts to do His will, not ours.
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be
strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in
your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be
able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and
depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge, that
ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:14-19
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He
that says, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth
is not in him. But whosoever keeps his word, in him verily is the love of God
perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that says he abides in him
ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 1 John 2:3-6 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him,
and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has to us.
God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him. Herein is
our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because
as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love
casts out fear: because fear has torment. He that fears is not made perfect in
love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and
hates his brother, he is a liar: for he that loves not his brother whom he hath
seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we
from him, That he who loves God love his brother also. 1 John 4:15-21
