Upfront: The Judicial Nomination filibuster and the hypocrisy of some Democrats

"As Chief Justice Rehnquist has recognized: ‘The Senate is surely under no obligation to confirm any particular nominee, but after the necessary time for
inquiry it should vote him up or vote him down.' An up or down vote, that is all we ask." Democrat Senator Tom Daschle on October 5, 1999

"We owe it to Americans across the country to give these nominees a vote. If our Republican colleagues don't like them, vote against them. But give them a vote." Democrat Senator Ted Kennedy on February 3, 1998

"I would object and fight against any filibuster on a judge, whether it is somebody I opposed or supported." Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy on June, 18
1998

"I have stated over and over on this floor that I would...object and fight against any filibuster on a judge, whether it is somebody I opposed or supported.... If we don't like somebody the president nominates, vote him or her up or down. But don't hold him in unconscionable limbo, because in doing that, the minority of senators really shame all senators." Sen. Patrick Leahy, Vermont Democrat, back in 1998

"I think we should have up-or-down votes in the committee and on the floor." Democrat Senator Harry Reid on June 9, 200

In October 1999, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D.-S.D.) found it "simply baffling that a senator would vote against even voting on a judicial nomination." Daschle has now baffled himself 12 times. In June 1998, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D.-Vt.), the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee,
promised to "object and fight against any filibuster on a judge, whether it is somebody I opposed or supported." He has broken that promise 15 times. Every
filibuster in the past 45 years designed solely to defeat a judicial nominee who would otherwise be confirmed by a Senate majority is going on right now.

The Constitution's Article VI: "The Senators and Representatives..., and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support his Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

Alexander Hamilton, wrote in the Federalist Papers; "It will be the office of the President to nominate, and, with the advice and consent of the Senate, to appoint. There will, of course, be no exertion of choice on the part of the Senate. They may defeat one choice of the Executive, and oblige him to make another; but they cannot themselves choose, they can only ratify or reject the choice of the President."

  • Petition to End Judicial Filibusters The Senate must abolish the filibuster for judicial appointments. If we do not return to the constitutional design and abolish the judicial filibuster now, then we can forget about any hope of appointing qualified Justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. Your voice in this matter is crucial. I urge you to sign Liberty Counsel's Petition to End Judicial Filibusters. Forward this email to your friends and ask them to sign the Petition. The future of the courts, including the Supreme Court, cannot be taken lightly. President Bush's nominees deserve an up or down vote. It is likely this year we will enter into the biggest battle for the next Supreme Court Justice we have ever seen. We need to make sure the judicial filibuster rule is abolished by then so that a few liberal Senators cannot subvert the Constitution and, in the process, undermine life and liberty. Please sign the Petition now and let your voice be heard. This Petition is also posted on our web site at http://www.LC.org. Also from Reclaiming America: Filibuster Factsheet & Make certain your voice is heard in Washington on this critical matter Be sure to call your Senators, politely asking them to honor an up or down vote on ALL nominees.

  • The Fair Tax is a 23 percent consumption tax on all new purchases. Unlike the current system that siphons off $23 from every $100 earned, the Fair Tax gives the consumer the control who much he/she is taxed--the more you spend, the more you are taxed. The Fair Tax system would replace the entire federal income tax and Social Security systems. All current forms of federal taxation would end. In other words, you would keep 100 percent of your paycheck. Your savings and investments would never be taxed. And the best part? The Fair Tax would completely fund the federal government, Social Security and Medicare! Sign the petition and let your opinions be heard.

  • National petition urging our elected officials to do everything in their power to Secure Our Borders and stop the flow of illegal aliens entering into our nation.

  • The End the Roe Litmus Test project has two primary grassroots components: postcards with educational fliers, and an e-mail campaign. To facilitate sending e-mails, a dedicated website, EndRoe.org, has been launched. Please visit this site and urge others to do so too. More information on how to promote EndRoe.org will be sent in the near future.

Take Action! Tell Congress any Social Security plan MUST include private accounts!

[TAKE ACTION NOW]

As various ideas circulate around Capital Hill about what to do with Social Security, a lot of people seem to be missing the point about the problem with Social Security.

The problem isn't just that Social Security is going broke.  The problem is that it offers a lousy rate of return for younger workers.  Adding more money to the system with tax increases or by cutting benefits will only make this problem worse, because the rate of return will only be lowered.  The only way to fix the real problem with Social Security—the paltry rate of return for younger workers—is to create private accounts.  Then every worker will be able to watch his or her retirement nest egg grow through the great power of compound interest.

That is why any Social Security plan must include private accounts.

Take Action now! Tell Congress that you expect any Social Security plan under consideration to include private accounts!

Sign Grassfire's "Taxpayer Freedom and Fairness" Petition Add your name to our "Taxpayer Freedom and Fairness" petition. With the death tax in place, The Heritage Foundation estimates that between 170-250K jobs are lost each year. Repealing the tax, they believe, would throw open the door to low-income workers, recent college grads who are trying to break into the workforce. Grassfire doesn't believe hard working citizens need to be taxed twice--both in life and death. We don't think a family should have to liquidate assets just so the U.S. government can get their 55% of the pie. This is wrong, and we are doing something about it.
