National Border Patrol Counsel Rebuts Misrepresentations of U.S.
Attorney Johnny Sutton Concerning the Prosecution of Border Patrol
Agents Compean and Ramos -
In
the last several months, CFIF activists have sent more than 150,000
faxes to President Bush urging him to pardon Border Patrol Agents Jose
Alonso Compean and Ignacio Ramos. Last week the two brave border
agents began serving a combined 23 years in prison for what
Congressman Tom Tancredo described as "doing their job" -- pursuing an
illegal alien trying to smuggle nearly 800 pounds of marijuana into
the United States. As reported by most of the media covering the
story, the prosecution's case hinged almost exclusively on the
statements of Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, the illegal alien drug smuggler
who was given immunity and taxpayer-funded medical care in exchange
for his testimony against Agents Compean and Ramos. Responding
to public outrage, U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton, whose office
prosecuted the case, has released no less than seven press statements
in defense of his side of the story. According to the National Border
Patrol Counsel (NBPC), Sutton's January 17 release, titled "Myth vs.
Reality - The Facts of Why the Government Prosecuted Agents Compean
and Ramos," presents a one-sided view of the incident. But as the NBPC
points out, "every story has at least two sides, and the incident
giving rise to the wrongful prosecution of Border Patrol Agents [Compean
and Ramos] is certainly no exception."

No-spanking bill in trouble (Campaign for Children & Families) Shocked at the news that they could be arrested for spanking their children even once, thousands of outraged parents have called talk radio shows and California’s legislators. The stupidity of this idea and the existence of millions of Americans who were glad they were spanked has sparked nationwide outrage. The result of all the heat? After just one week of controversy, the no-spanking bill has not yet been introduced; it's having a legislative "time out!"
In one TV news story, Democrat Sally Lieber of San Jose, the bill’s author, said she was “surprised” at the outpouring of opposition from parents. In another TV story, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez of Los Angeles, who's supported ALL anti-family legislation, said he wasn’t sure he would support the bill to ban spanking! Lieber abandoned her initial plans to introduce her bill on Jan. 25; however, she could still do it by the Feb. 23 deadline to submit bills. However, if the heat stays “on,” I think the no-spanking bill will be dropped because it was “beaten to death" by pro-family citizens. In the last week, there have been more than 400 news stories about this ridiculous bill!
There’s a lesson in all of this: This is another example of how Democrat politicians attack family values. Remember last year's school sexual indoctrination bills, which virtually every Democrat legislator in Sacramento voted for? Along with the anti-parent psychological associations, these so-called "public servants" actually believe that spanking your child for disobedience or for running out into the street is “child abuse.” More of them would say so publicly if opposition to the no-spanking bill wasn't so intense right now. The bill's author, Sally Lieber, is the second-most-powerful Democrat in the California Assembly and enjoys the title of Speaker pro Tempore. Why don't we hear Democrat politicians coming out against the spanking ban? In contrast to the Republican caucus, which is united against this bad bill, not a single Democrat, not even Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, has publicly said they support the right of parents to discipline their own children!

SENATE VERSION OF NATIONAL RIGHT-TO-CARRY BILL INTRODUCED
U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) recently introduced S. 388--the Senate version of H.R. 226, a national Right-to-Carry reciprocity bill that would provide national reciprocity for state carry licensees. This legislation would allow any person with a valid carry permit or license issued by a state to carry a concealed firearm in any other state if they meet certain criteria. The bill would not create a federal licensing system; it would simply require the states to recognize each other's carry permits, just as they recognize drivers' licenses.

JUST WHO DO OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS REPRESENT?
Forget for a moment that anti-gun mayors Michael Bloomberg of New York City, Thomas Menino of Boston, and Adrian Fenty of Washington, D.C., all represent cities with highly restrictive gun laws and high levels of crime. Let's try, if only for a second, to ignore the fact that their prescriptions to reduce gun violence in their cities will not affect criminals one iota, but will certainly negatively impact their law-abiding gun owners. Briefly set aside your offense over them blaming gun crimes in their cities on the actions, not of criminals, but of citizens from outside their jurisdictions. Excuse, if you will, their ignorance on the "Tiahrt Amendment" that seems to be the prime target of the mayors' ire. (The "Tiahrt Amendment" prohibits the release of firearm trace data to any entity except a law enforcement agency conducting a bona fide criminal investigation involving the firearm. It ensures politically-motivated lawsuits, such as those being promoted by Bloomberg, don't misuse this data to try and bankrupt the lawful firearm industry through reckless litigation. As NRA and numerous law enforcement officers and agencies have continuously pointed out, release of this information also jeopardizes ongoing criminal investigations and the lives of law enforcement personnel involved with them.)
Instead, let's focus on the egomaniacal nature of Hizzoner Bloomberg and his crusade to foist upon citizens outside of New York City, New York City-style gun laws. In a press conference on Tuesday featuring more than 50 mayors, Bloomberg accused any lawmaker who supports the "Tiahrt Amendment" of "voting to put guns in the hands of criminals." The Mayor vowed further he would "remind every one of their constituents, particularly two years from now when they have an election."
Not surprisingly, the mayors won't have to go it alone, as with Congress under new, anti-Second Amendment leadership, an anti-gun task force has been created to ensure the mayors' water will be carried in Washington, D.C. Task force members include: Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.; F-rated by NRA-PVF); Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.; F-rated by NRA-PVF); and Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich; F-rated by NRA-PVF).
While Mayor Bloomberg is contemplating spending hundreds of millions of his personal fortune to run for president, thankfully, he is NOT currently the President! We would recommend Bloomberg focus on taking care of his own backyard and enforcing existing laws against his city's criminals, rather than trying to spread failed gun policies across the nation.
Rest assured, the Mayor doesn't have to worry about reminding constituents about their elected officials' views on gun control; NRA will continue to do that--just as we will with those anti-gun officials who harbor their own personal White House ambitions!

In contrast to state initiatives forcing citizens to obtain health insurance, President Bush proposed reforming the tax code to enable individuals to deduct the cost of the insurance. By treating insurance costs as income and permitting deductions, the plan would allow insured families and singles to deduct $15,000 and $7,500 of their respective incomes. The President estimates more than 100-million Americans will benefit from lower tax bills, although higher-income executives and professionals may experience slightly higher taxes. With the average cost of employer-provided coverage at $11,500, most persons with health benefits would enjoy a tax reduction.
Unlike recent grandiose and punitive state schemes to socialize their healthcare markets, wasting billions to require coverage for relatively few citizens, tax deductibility may prompt a net increase of five-million insured Americans at no cost to the government. Making health insurance deductible income for individuals is strong medicine that can reduce the ranks of the uninsured and help keep our market-driven healthcare system out of the clutches of unwieldy bureaucrats. Congress would be wise to approve it and also to enable Americans to purchase coverage from companies in any state, free of the worst state mandates.
