Complacency and Apathy = Liberal Tyranny

Upfront - Complacency and Apathy = Liberal Tyranny
With the Presidential choices narrowing down, can we afford not to be diligent? If Thomas Paine never penned his thoughts, if Ben Franklin never spoke up at the Constitutional Convention, if Thomas Jefferson was apathetic and never produced the Declaration of Independence, if those who signed the Patriots Declaration were instead complacent, the citizens of America today would not have a vote - yet they do - but will they?
"Cherish, therefore, the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. Do not be too severe upon their errors, but reclaim them by enlightening them. If once they become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress, and Assemblies, Judges, and Governors, shall all become wolves." -- Thomas Jefferson (letter to Edward Carrington, 16 January 1787) Reference: The Learning of Liberty, Prangle, 111.

News and commentary (Here we are in year 2008.)
“You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot lift the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.” William J. H. Boetcker
Economics, Anyone? (Thomas Sowell) The other day, a reader e-mailed me to ask for an explanation of the gold standard. He had heard it advocated in one of the political speeches. ...The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics," edited by David R. Henderson and published by the Liberty Fund in Indianapolis. It had an article on the gold standard. ....My hope is that "Economic Facts and Fallacies" will expose some of the worst fallacies and leave readers sufficiently skeptical that they will take other political "solutions" with a grain of salt and stop to think before they join a stampede. Fallacies can sound very plausible if you don't stop to analyze what is being said and don't bother to check out the facts. Some of the fallacies examined in various chapters of "Economic Facts and Fallacies" include the following:
THE PRESIDENT'S NOMINEES (RFCnet.org) Most people are familiar with the fact that Democrat leader Senator Harry Reid is blocking several judicial appointments made by President Bush. Most do not know that he is also blocking appointments to many federal departments as well, including the FAA. There are now 180 important posts that are unfilled because the Democrats who control the Senate want to play partisan political games. To see how serious this has become read the President's remarks of this week. ...(Excerpt: Unfortunately, some of their colleagues continue to delay votes for 28 of my other nominees. The Senate has sat on these nominations to the Court of Appeals for nearly 600 days. And in some cases, the Senate has imposed a new and extra constitutional standard, where nominees who have the support of the majority of the Senate can be blocked by a minority of obstructionists. As a result, some judgeships can go unfulfilled for years, and justice can be delayed for the American people.

George Soros Funding New Liberal Advocacy Group Billionaire financier George Soros is contributing $2.5 million to a new political organization that promotes Democratic causes in the 2008 elections. A year-end campaign report filed with the IRS and uncovered by The New York Times confirmed an earlier Newsmax report disclosing that the group, Fund for America, was organized by Taco Bell heir Rob McKay, former Clinton White House Chief of Staff John Podesta, and Anna Burger of the Service Employees International Union. The SEIU matched Soros’ contribution. Newsmax reported in November that the liberal activists had joined forces to form the so-called 527 group — named for a section of the tax code that allows such an organization to attempt to influence elections as long as it discloses donors and expenses. Fund for America is expected to air television ads and take other political action designed to help Democrats win the White House and retain control of Congress, Andrew Malcolm of the Los Angeles Times reported. The organization will also focus on direct mail and door-to-door canvassing.
Digging Up Democratic Skeletons La Shawn Barber - Democrats, seen as the civil rights party, supported slavery, opposed civil rights legislation, instituted the "Black Codes," and created the Jim Crow system. The Republican Party, in contrast, was founded in opposition to slavery, and supported post-Civil War and Civil Rights Movement-era legislation.
The Unknown History of Civil Rights Wynton Hall - How interesting that so many race-related political myths continue to be perpetuated by Democrats who know better. ...And even as LBJ was being praised by liberals for his appointment of Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court, behind closed doors LBJ’s cynical brand of “identity politics” became clear. As presidential historian Robert Dallek recounts, LBJ explained his decision to a staff member by saying, “"Son, when I appoint a nig—r to the court, I want everyone to know he's a nig—r." Still, despite his record and rhetoric, LBJ fought hard to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But those he had to fight against were Democrats, not Republicans. Democrats like former Klansman Senator Robert C. Byrd and others launched a filibuster to kill the Civil Rights bill. The chances of stopping them seemed bleak. Never in the history of the United States Senate had members mustered enough votes to stop a filibuster (a procedure known as “cloture” that requires 67 votes to invoke) on a civil rights bill. So the Republican Minority Leader Everett Dirksen set out to get the votes necessary to defeat the filibuster. On June 9, 1964, the night before the historic cloture vote, the 68 year old Republican stayed up late into the night typing a speech on twelve sheets of Senate stationery that every American should know but that few do. The next day, Senator Everett Dirksen delivered his oration on the floor of the U.S. Senate just minutes before the final vote. The final tally: 71 to 29, with 27 of the 33 Republicans voting to defeat the Democrat-led filibuster.

’Non Compos Mentis’: CAIR cries foul According to a recent article from Reuters, non-Christians are feeling “left out” of the 2008 presidential elections. Both Democrats and Republicans are accused of talking about their Christian faith too much and alienating non-Christians voters, “despite the constitutional separation of church and state,” which by the way doesn’t exist. You might think that Reuters would quote a Jew or perhaps a Buddhist to lend credence to this claim, but of course they cite a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) who says that “non-Christians are concerned they will be excluded from the process. I welcome faith values if they inspire candidates to do good things. But I worry if it is used as a litmus test to include someone in political participation.” What Reuters doesn’t say is that CAIR has ties to Islamic terrorist organizations, and that according to its “Chairman Emeritus” Omaer Ahmad, the organization’s goal is for Islam to become the dominant religion in America, with the Koran as the nation’s highest authority. Investor’s Business Daily called CAIR “the PR machine of militant Islam” after the organization tried to sabotage the Secular Islam Summit, and in 2007 federal prosecutors named CAIR as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a plot to fund the Palestinian terror group Hamas. Based on a review of CAIR’s 2006 annual budget, The Washington Times estimated that the organization has fewer than 1,700 members, which would seem to imply that the group isn’t even remotely representative of American Muslims in particular, much less non-Christian Americans in general. Nonetheless Reuters quoted them anyway, apparently failing to see the irony of a CAIR spokesman complaining about a “litmus test” when that same person—if he had his way—would implement a litmus test that allowed only Muslims into power.
Economic Fallacies -- Interview with Thomas Sowell Bill Steigerwald - Economist and syndicated columnist Thomas Sowell says he has lost track of how many books he's written on economics, history, social policy, ethnicity and the history of ideas. ...There are three questions that I think would destroy the left if people could ask them: "What are the facts?" "What are the consequences of what you are going to do?" And "What is the trade-off?” (Also)..."But it is meant to show how so many things that look one way are in fact diametrically the opposite when you take a closer look at them -- and especially if you look at them systematically instead of just in terms of what rhetoric sets off your emotions, which is what seems to be going on in both parties these days."
U.S. Senate Report: Over 400 Prominent Scientists Disputed Man-made Global Warming Claims in 2007
08-07 Brief “Iraqi terrorists [recently] outfitted two Muslim women with Down syndrome with IEDs and dispatched them into a busy al-Ghazi pet market in Baghdad’s Jadida section. When the women reached a location where their bomb-laden bodies would cause the greatest carnage, the IEDs were detonated remotely by a cowardly Islamic radical. Apparently, al-Qaida is running short of mentally competent volunteers who want to murder fellow Muslims in the process of becoming ‘martyrs’ for Allah... Using the handicapped, women and children for terror is nothing new for Islamic radicals. During the January 2005 Iraqi parliamentary elections, al-Qaida used a child with Down syndrome to carry out one of 38 suicide attacks at polling stations that left more than 40 people dead. In March 2005, terrorists detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle with two children in the back seat after U.S. soldiers let it through a Baghdad checkpoint. The vehicle had been allowed to pass when soldiers saw the children and became less suspicious. Once the vehicle got through the checkpoint, the adults parked it and ran, detonating the car with the children inside... When coalition forces moved to disrupt al-Qaida networks operating in Diyala province in central Iraq Jan. 30, they encountered armed terrorists using women and children as human shields... In radical Islam, the slogan ‘women and children first’ has taken on a whole new meaning.” —Oliver North
