Lessons of the Holy Spirit

A Guide for Entering the Kingdom of God and Discover Why it Pleased God to Hide His Kingdom from the Wise

(17 lessons of why we must be Born Again of the Spirit) - By Gary W. Kelly Sr. (ISBN: 1600340415)

Reading the Scriptures doesn't have to be "Greek" to you. There's no way around the confusion when it comes to reading and understanding the Scriptures. Most of the original meaning seems to have been lost in translation, leaving a hodgepodge of obscure, conflicting interpretations. Lessons of the Holy Spirit by Gary W. Kelly Sr. provides a highlight of Biblical commentaries, including passages of Scriptural references, and hopes to dispel some of the falsified claims surrounding Scripture in general. Lessons of the Holy Spirit also aims to introduce challenges to our worldly wisdom and doctrines. Kelly will lift the veil on some of the bible's most cryptic passages, allowing readers to "see through the glass darkly."

Summary: It "pleased God" and "seemed good" to Him that we cannot know God through human wisdom or education. We can only know God through His Holy Spirit.

Education vs. revelation: Why we need to discern the difference between worldly wisdom and spiritual wisdom. "It is the Spirit that quickens, the flesh profits nothing."

Challenging both secular "wisdom" and Christian "doctrines." "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." Do you wish to know Him as He knows you? "For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call."

Review

There are 17 lessons in this work with the aim to challenge all, Christian and non-Christian, on the role the Holy Spirit plays in our lives. Extensive Scriptures are provided for each of the lessons, making it great to see the Word and its application. Teachers and leadership within the church will also have pointed references for discussion. Here author Gary Kelly states his aim for the book: "It is with hope that the result will be a renewed thirst or desire for seeking first the kingdom of God".

Whether you fully embrace the Holy Spirit working in your life or approach this topic with hesitancy, this is a powerful resource to reveal how the inner workings of the Holy Spirit, with our cooperation, can help us in our daily lives. Kelly will highlight how distractions from life's demands and desires can keep us from seeking Him. Because, he shares, God requires a contrite heart, it is through humility that we seek Him and that there is nothing we can do to earn eternity other than to accept and confess what He did for us.

Book Summary

Lessons of The Holy Spirit - A Guide for Entering the Kingdom of God and Discover Why it Pleased God to Hide His Kingdom from the Wise  - 17 lessons of why we "must be Born Again" of the Spirit (John 3:3-7)
o Do you find the Scriptures hard to understand? Why did it "seem good" to the Father to hide the Kingdom of God from those who are wise in this world? (2 Peter 3:16, Matthew 11:17-25)
o Interpretation of the Scriptures, by human wisdom or revealed by God's Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit "inspired" those who wrote the Scriptures and it is the Holy Spirit who "reveals" the Scriptures. (2 Peter 1:20 and 1 Corinthians 2:6-16)
o "It is the Spirit that quickens, the flesh profits nothing." (John 6:63)
o It is one thing to "see" the "promise" of the Kingdom of God and another to "enter," as did the Jews who left Egypt and wandered in the desert without entering the Promised Land? (John 3:3-5)
o Do you know God as He knows you, or do you still "see through the glass darkly?" (1 Corinthians 13:12 )"

o Created in His image, the Trinity of God, the trinity of man: Why we must understand this critical foundation. (Proverbs 20:27, John 4:24, Job 32:8-10, Ecclesiastes 12:7, James 2:26)
o There is a reason God did not speak us into existence, as He did the vegetation, animals, moon and stars. Instead, He chose to create us out of the Earth. He shaped us with His fingers from the soil. "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." (Genesis 1:27) and "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (Genesis 2:7)
o Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father has sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: (John 20:21-22)

These 17 lessons were primarily inspired by the ministries of Dr. Charles S. Price, Smith Wigglesworth, Derek Prince, John G. Lake, Andrew Murray, Charles Finney, Kenneth Hagin, Dennis & Rita Bennett, and Myles Munroe.

Job 10:11-13, 32:8-10, 38:36 - You have clothed me with skin and flesh and have knit me with bones and sinews. You have granted me life and favor and Your visitation has preserved my spirit. And You have hidden these things in Your heart: I know that this is with You. ...But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty gives them understanding. Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment. Therefore I say, Listen to me! I will also show my knowledge. ...Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or, who has given understanding to the heart?

Matthew 11:15-30: He that has ears to hear, let him hear. But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knows the Son, but the Father; neither knows any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

John 16:12-13: I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. John 4:24: God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him id Spirit and in Truth.

John 4:24: God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him id Spirit and in Truth.

1 Corinthians 1:18-31: For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, has God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glories, let him glory in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 2:9-14: But as it is written, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of a man, the things which God has prepared for them that love Him. But God has revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knows no man, but the Spirit of Go. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Ghost teaches; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man received not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

We are 3 in one as God is 3 in 1. Just as God is a Spirit, we are a spirit that has a body and soul.

Genesis 1:27 - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

1 John 5:7-8 - For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

1 Thessalonians 5:18-23  - And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Job 32:8-10 - But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty gives them understanding. Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment. Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will show mine opinion.

Proverbs 20:27 - The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 - Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

James 2:26 - For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

What is the Kingdom of God?

Romans 14:17 - For the Kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Luke 17:20-21 - And when He was demanded of the Pharisees, when the Kingdom of God should come, He answered them and said, The Kingdom of God comes not with observation: Neither shall they say, Loh here! or, lo there! for behold, the Kingdom of God is within you. John 14:16-17 - And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it sees him not, neither knows him: but ye know him; for he dwells with you, and shall be in you.

John 1:5 And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

John 1:10-13 - He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, bit of God.

John 3:3-6 - Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

John 8:15 - Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. (2 Corinthians 5:16a - Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh:...[See Judging and Reproof])

Romans 8:1,4,5,12,13 - There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. ...That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. ...Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Proverbs 9:10 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Matthew 7:21-23 - “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonderful works in Your name?’ But then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from Me, you who practice evil.’

Divining the Godhead

Learning a thing or two about the Holy Spirit

LONGWOOD, FL. Speak of the Holy Trinity and most people will know what you're talking about. They may even have heard about the Holy Spirit, the lesser-known person of the trio. But what most of us don't know is that no one can ever fully understand God and His Kingdom without the Holy Spirit. Gary W. Kelly Sr., author of Lessons of the Holy Spirit  - A Guide for Entering the Kingdom of God and Discover Why It Pleased God to hide His Kingdom from the Wise ($13.99, paperback, 1-60034-041-5), hopes to provide readers with a reverent appreciation of the Holy Spirit's ministry. Traditionally, the Holy Spirit is the third cog in the wheel of the trinity, the one who helps us to "abide" in the fellowship of God. But in a real-world, practical sense it's easy to forget just what the Holy Spirit does for us.

Says Kelly, "While those wise in this world may define values and morals in the wisdom of men, the Holy Spirit writes the laws of God on our hearts. With all the issues being faced in our personal lives and socially, and highlighted by the war on terror and the culture war, Christians are still called to seek first the Kingdom of God."

Lessons of the Holy Spirit contains 17 lessons meant to challenge worldly wisdom and religious doctrine and draw readers closer to God on His terms, not through worldly traditions. Christian religions with various doctrines abound, yet many do not fully embrace or realize the importance of the one thing that separates Christianity from all other religions: Christianity is the only religion where a blameless Savior died for our sins to reconcile us to God. Christ is the only prophet who was raised from the dead, and the only prophet who provides the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

The book also addresses the difficulties of understanding Scripture, and through it, God's will. With so many different Scripture interpretations out there, it is hard to settle on just one or know which is the right one to accept. With the current assault on America's Christian heritage and virtues, Lessons of the Holy Spirit hopes to make known the truth about the Sermon on the Mount and the ministry Christ proclaimed. Ultimately guiding the reader into developing a personal relationship with our Creator, that we shall see Him as He sees us and no longer as "looking through a glass darkly," to know Him and make Him known. Through Lessons of the Holy Spirit the author desires to have the reader come to know the "peace which passes understanding," the "peace that Jesus gives, not that of the world," and the "joy unspeakable," the "joy that no man takes away." As Paul declared: "For the Kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost." (Romans 14:17)
